What is Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics)?

Rhinoplasty, also known as rhinoplasty in medical terminology, is an operation that corrects nasal deformities, asymmetrical appearance, and breathing problems caused by genetic and traumatic causes. According to the Edwin Smith papyrus, the birth of rhinoplasty dates back to Ancient Egypt. According to ancient Indian sources, nose surgery was performed for the first time in 600 BC, when the skin was removed from the cheek by doctor Sushruta. In the 15th century, nasal reduction surgery was performed by removing incisions from the outside. In the 18th century, German Surgeon Carl Von Graefe first used the word 'rhinoplasty' and based it on Indian techniques.

In 1891, Otorhinolaryngology Specialist Orlando Rou found the treatment of nasal tip curvatures, changed the perspective on rhinoplasty aesthetics and formed the basis of the techniques used with the studies. In 1937, new studies were carried out by developing his own technique in nose surgery in the modern sense. In the first place, the operation was performed only on the correction of fractures, but with the technological developments and changes in the perception of beauty, it began to be considered aesthetically. With the increase in studies, more natural and more aesthetic operations were performed in the operations. In Turkey, operations began to be performed in the 1970s with the expectation of both health and beauty. Nasal aesthetic surgeries all over the world have changed and developed, and today, the building blocks for the realization of natural, permanent operations have been created.
What are the Types of Nose Aesthetics?

The types of surgeries performed to make the nose symmetrical, harmonious and proportional to the face vary depending on the problem in the nose. These;

Rhinoplasty due to deformity (Primary Rhinoplasty)
Complicated (revision) aesthetics (Complicated Rhinoplasty)
Nose tip aesthetics (Tipplasty)
Aesthetics due to breathing problems (Septorinoplasty)
Concha surgery
Breathing problem surgery (Septoplasty)
Non-surgical rhinoplasty

1- Nose Aesthetics Due to Deformity (Primary Rhinoplasty)

It is an aesthetic operation performed to enter deformities in the nose, which is generally preferred in nose surgeries. If there is a nasal bridge that disrupts the facial symmetry, the nose belt is removed, the cartilages are reduced if necessary, and the projection of the nose is shortened.

2- Complicated (Revision) Aesthetics (Complicated Rhinoplasty)

Repetition of surgeries that have undergone nasal surgery before but still has not resolved the problem is called complicated or revision. In revision surgeries, the nose is restructured in terms of external appearance and a healthy, aesthetic nose is obtained.

3- Nose Tip Aesthetics (Tipplasty)

It is a type of surgery performed to intervene in the cartilage structure of the nose without touching the area where the nasal arch is, and to correct the deformity of the tip of the nose.

4- Aesthetics Due to Breathing Problems (Septorinoplasty)

It is a type of operation in which the nose is shaped aesthetically and at the same time the breathing problem is eliminated. In rhinoplasty, arch and cartilage curvatures are intervened, and the structure that prevents breathing is corrected.

5- Concha Surgery

The meat in the inner part of the nose is called 'concha'. The turbinates grow over time, sometimes showing allergic symptoms due to environmental and physiological reasons, and prevent oxygen intake from the airways. In the operation performed in rhinoplasty, the conchae in the nose is reduced and thus breathing through the air channels is made easier.

6- Breathing Problem Surgery (Septoplasty)

In nose surgery, it is a procedure that is performed by interfering with the polyp, turbinate or septoma that prevents breathing in the nose without considering any aesthetic concerns. Septoplasty operation provides more comfortable breathing by intervening inside the nose. Thus, the person's quality of life is increased.

7- Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

In the non-surgical rhinoplasty, which is called 'Liquid Rhinoplasty' in medical terminology, it is a type of non-surgical aesthetic performed on the outer surface of the nose, without the need for anesthesia, only to remove the deformities in the nose. The deformity in the nose of the person is filled with the nasal filling method, the injection method is applied to the areas that disrupt the structure in the projection image of the nose. This method is a temporary nasal aesthetic method, and after a while, the filler melts without harming the body. Problems such as wrinkled appearance in the nose, contour problems, droopy nasal tip are eliminated with non-surgical rhinoplasty.

What is Done Before Nose Aesthetics?

Before the nose surgery, the person's health history is evaluated. It is determined whether there is a previous surgery or not.
A blood test is taken the day before and it is checked whether the surgery is suitable.
Eating and drinking should be stopped 8 hours before the operation so that the anesthesia does not cause any complications in the body.
D Smoking should be stopped at least 2 days before. Thus, the rate of wound healing can be increased.
Consumption of regularly used drugs, vitamin supplements and herbal tea should be stopped.
If there are drugs used regularly, the surgeon and anesthesiologist should be informed.
Photographs are taken from both side profiles of the person before and after the nose surgery.
Jewelry should not be worn and comfortable clothing should be preferred.
There is no harm in having an operation during the menstrual period. Only nurses should be informed.

How is Nose Aesthetic Surgery Performed?

Nose surgeries are started by determining the shape of the nose that is suitable for the person's face under general anesthesia. In rhinoplasty surgery, the type of surgery is determined according to the internal structure of the nose, depending on whether there is a problem of shortness of breath in the nose. If there is a problem such as sinusitis, the breathing problem is eliminated first. Then, the cartilage, bone structure, and curvature in the nose are intervened in the curvature and septum, and the shape of the nose is corrected, so that the nose takes its final shape.
What are the Nose Surgery Techniques?

In nose surgery, 2 different techniques are used according to the doctor's decision and the intervention to be performed. These;

Open rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty

1- Open Nose Aesthetics

Open nose surgery is generally the preferred technique because of the low nasal tip, bony curvature, large nasal concha (inner concha), a revision required, collapse of the nasal cartilage, and genetic factors. This technique makes it easier to correct the deformity by intervening more easily in the cartilage and bone structure in the correct planning of the surgery.

2- Closed Nose Aesthetics

Closed nose surgery, also known as scarless nose surgery, is performed by making incisions in the inner parts of the nose. Recovery time is faster than open nose surgery and scarring is less likely. After the doctor's examination, the doctor decides which technique will be used in the aesthetic operation to be performed on the nose structure.

What Should Be Done After Nose Aesthetics?

After rhinoplasty, you should rest for 4 days in a head-up position.
Ice should be applied around the eyes for two days to prevent edema and swelling. However, ice should be kept away from the plaster on the upper surface of the nose.
Since tampons are used in the nose, mouth should be breathed and plenty of water should be consumed for dry mouth.
Sudden movements should be avoided.
Sports activities should be interrupted and heavy objects should not be lifted.
The nose should be protected from all possible impacts and movements that will create trauma should be avoided.
Attention should be paid to actions such as blowing or sneezing that will damage the nose.
He can breathe easily after the nose pad is removed. However, the given drugs should not be continued under the supervision of a doctor.
In order to increase the healing of the inner crusts of the nose, earwax can be cleaned for the nose by immersing it in oxygenated water.
Spicy foods that will cause itchy nose should be avoided, and foods that can be easily consumed, facilitate digestion and promote healing should be preferred.
Care should be taken to consume fruits and vegetables that are high in fiber.
Since the nose will be sensitive in the first place after rhinoplasty, it should be protected from sun rays and care should be taken to use sunscreen.

What are the Advantages of Nose Aesthetics?

If the person has problems such as sinusitis, polyps or concha, nasal canals are opened with nasal surgery. Thus, it provides more comfortable breathing. After the nose surgery, the problem of smelling is eliminated and it is beneficial to smell more comfortably. If there is an infection in the upper respiratory tract, it is eliminated. It helps to reduce heart and vascular problems as it ensures proper breathing. The sleep quality is increased by eliminating the snoring problem due to the person's breathing problem. It helps to get more efficiency in sports and all exercises. It also contributes to the person's self-confidence by having a nose that is compatible with the face he lives in. Thus, positive changes occur in social life and quality of life.
What are the Disadvantages of Nose Aesthetics?

In the first days of rhinoplasty, which carries less risk than other types of surgery, numbness may be seen at the tip of the nose. However, this situation disappears with the fit of the nose shape. There is a risk of infection due to intranasal sensitivity. In order to prevent the nose from getting infected, the medications given by the doctor should be taken on a scheduled basis. Since the face area does not wash until the nose strips come off, oiliness may occur on the skin surface. However, with the help of cotton, the face can be cleaned with soft touches without touching the nose.
To Whom is Rhinoplasty Applied?

Those who have deformities in the nose due to genetic or traumatic reasons,
Those who are not satisfied with the bony, curved or general appearance of the nose,
Those who have shortness of breath due to breathing problems,
Those who have the problem of polyp and nasal concha growth in the nose,
Those who have deformities such as low nasal tip or unequal nostrils
Those who have only aesthetic problems in the nose are suitable for rhinoplasty surgery.

Who Cannot Have Rhinoplasty Surgery?

It is not appropriate to do people who are psychologically prejudiced, such as disliking oneself. This condition is called 'body dysmorphic disorder' in psychology. No matter how much the person undergoes surgery and no matter how aesthetically pleasing it looks, it causes even the smallest defect to enlarge. At the same time, it is possible to encounter problems such as depression, lowering the quality of life, and problems in socialization.
It is not recommended for people with sleep apnea problems. The reason for this is the obstruction of the airways and the problem of shortness of breath. In order for the person to have rhinoplasty surgery, he or she may first undergo an operation for the sleep apnea problem. Then he can easily perform rhinoplasty surgery.
If the person who will undergo rhinoplasty surgery has a bleeding disorder problem, it is not considered appropriate. The reason for this is that if the blood does not clot during the operation, blood loss may occur. In order to overcome this problem, the vitamin supplement of the person should be questioned and the conditions that will prevent blood clotting should be eliminated.

How Long Does Nose Aesthetics Heal?

The full recovery time of the person who underwent nose surgery varies from person to person. 6 hours after the operation, the patient can start light walking and light walking should be for 3 minutes. After a week, the tampons are removed and social life is resumed at a slower pace. Back to work is possible. All edema must be removed for 100% recovery to occur. For this, at least one year must have passed since the operation.
How to Eliminate Edema After Nose Aesthetics?

Temporary problems such as swelling, bruising and edema are experienced after rhinoplasty. Edema is seen as a part of recovery and it improves over time with each passing day. The edema, which descends from top to bottom in the first days, disappears later in people with thick nose structure and in a shorter time in people with thin nose skin structure. The bruises around the eyes disappear visibly in the first week. The edema under the skin is eliminated from the body within 6 months. Therefore, one must be patient and act carefully.

Consumption of parsley, which is one of the natural greens with edema reliever effect, can be done. Since parsley has diuretic properties, water consumption should be increased at the same time. At the same time, support can be obtained from lymph drainage massage, which is one of the medical massage methods and regulates the blood in the lymph system. Thus, the edema in the body can be removed in a shorter time than expected.
